Coronavirus Update: Friday, November 5, 2021

A strong October jobs report today means the United States has now recovered 81% of pre-pandemic jobs. Another 4.2 million jobs are yet to be recovered, according to reporters on the employment beat. Here are today's other developments:
If you mandate, they will vax   Right-wing, anti-vax noise is clouding a simple reality: If you mandate vaccines, people will and are vaccinating. Agence France-Presse has details.
If you fly it, they will come   Delta Air Lines says there has been a 450% increase in sales in the six weeks since the United States announced it would reopen borders to vaccinated travelers starting on Monday, November 8. The airline, which operates nonstops to ten of the 33 nations affected by the reopening, expects most of those flights to be full on Monday.
If it's sane, Florida pols will fight it   Continuing efforts of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to stop mask and vaccine mandates has raised his profile ahead of an expected 2024 presidential run, but traumatized local governments, schools and local businesses. The Washington Post has the gory details.
If it's spooky, they won't book   U.S. average hotel occupancy fell to 58.9% for the week ended October 30. STR, the lodging statisticians, say that a pre-Halloween slump is traditional.
If you chart it, the stats will lie   The TSA says 1,940,302 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints on yesterday. That's actually a few thousand more than last Thursday (October 28). But it represents only 77.4% of 2019 volume compared to last week's staggering 94%.

Coronavirus Update: Thursday, November 4, 2021

The Biden Administration Labor Department, through OSHA, released its Coronavirus vaccine and testing rules. Federal contractors and private firms with more than 100 employees will be required to vaccine or test employees weekly. The testing is crucial because it allows the federal government to claim in court that there is no vaccine mandate--and that will help against red-state governors suing to stop a "vaccine mandate." For more details, consult The New York Times and The Washington Post. Here are today's other developments:
Austria agonistes   Vienna and some other parts of Austria are again reinstating some curbs on public behavior due to a new rise in Coronavirus infections. The Local Austria has details.
September song   IATA, the global airline trade group, says worldwide flying in September was 46.6% of volume in September, 2019. That' slightly better than August, when it was 44% of 2019 volume.
The season for travel   Forty-two percent of well-to-do Americans are planning two trips from Thanksgiving to mid-January. And 85% of high-income households plan to match or exceed their 2019 travel budget. One in four less affluent families are tightening travel budgets, however. The statistics come from Deloitte's 2021 Holiday Travel Survey.
Slowly it turns   Lufthansa was one of the hardest hit carriers during the early months of the pandemic. But bookings have recovered to 80% of 2019 levels, according to Lufthansa Group chief executive Carsten Spohr. Bookings, he said, are "increasing and increasing."
Down and Downer   The TSA says that 1,525,948 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints on yesterday. That's 71% of 2019 volume on a similar Wednesday last year. However, it is down from last Wednesday in absolute volume and down nearly four percentage point on the 2021-to-2019 comparison.

About face   As infections among the unvaccinated rise quickly, several regions of Germany are restoring Coronavirus restrictions for unvaxxed people. The Local Germany has the details.
Arrivederci, i troll   An anti-vaccination leader from Trieste has been banned from Rome for a year after mounting an unauthorized demonstration in the Italian capital. Via some of its dockworkers, Trieste has emerged as the epicenter of scattered resistance to the vaccine "green pass" now required to work in Italy. Trieste is also epicenter of Italy's worst new outbreak of Coronavirus in Italy. Wanted in Rome has the details.
Same old, same old   The TSA says that 1,992,577 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints on Monday and 1,487,874 did so yesterday. Those figures almost exactly match Monday and Tuesday last week.

Here are today's other developments:
November in Paris   The outdoor space that Paris restaurants and cafes were permitted to use when indoor seating was closed now must be returned to public use. The Local France has details.
They huffed and they puffed and got vaxxed   For all the huffing, puffing and failed lawsuits, New York City workers were about 94% vaccinated by yesterday's deadline. The global death toll from Coronavirus has now passed five million people with no end in sight. Here's how the Associated Press is covering it. Here are today's other developments:
The fall in the fall   About 5.3 million people passed through TSA security checkpoints at U.S. airports over the weekend (Friday-Sunday). That represents 80.8% of 2019 traffic on a similar weekend. Both numbers are down sharply compared to last week, but that's no surprise as we enter a historically slow period before the Thanksgiving Weekend crunch.
What anti-vaxxers have wrought   There were 506,884 new Coronavirus cases in the United States during the last week, according to Johns Hopkins. That is down marginally from last week. The death toll was 9,321, a more notable decline from last week. But, still, why are we losing more than 1,300 people a day when we have vaccines? Oh, right, anti-vax fools.
Eight of one   Eurocontrol says aircraft traffic in Europe averaged 22,962 flights a day during the week ended October 31. That's down 1.1% week-over-week. However, it represents 81% of 2019 volume, a substantial jump from recent weeks.
The Word   "Vax" is the Word of the Year, according to the Oxford Dictionary, which opines about this kind of stuff right about this time every year. Here's what it says about "vax" and related variants.
October average   The TSA screened an average of 1.84 million people a day in October. That represents 79.3% of 2019 volume. The numbers were compiled from TSA statistics by Associated Press aviation writer David Koenig.
Maine's moment   Maine tourism recorded a smashing summer as travelers searched for places deemed safe from Coronavirus. Maine has one of the highest vaccination rates in the country. The New York Times has the details.
Shanghai surprise   Shanghai Disneyland is closed today and tomorrow (local time) after one case of Coronavirus was detected. The BBC has some of the details and The Wall Street Journal has others.

Jen Psaki, the chief White House press spokesperson, says she has tested positive for a breakthrough case of Covid-19. She's isolated as she awaits further testing and developments. NPR has the details. Here are this weekend's other developments:
What religion believes in infecting your fellow man?   The Supreme Court turned away a challenge to Maine's vaccine mandate for health care workers. (The New York Times has details.) And a federal appeals court blocked a challenge to New York's health care vaccine mandate. (The New York Daily News has those details.) Both cases turned on claims about the lack of a religious exemption.
If you mandate, they will vax   Sanford Health, a leading provider in the Upper Midwest, says that 97% of its employees are now vaccinated. "The vaccine mandate worked," adds Dr. Doug Griffin, a Sanford Health vice president. “As a result ... we have also seen a decline in Covid-19 infections and sick leave among staff." The Associated Press has the details.
Autumn in Europe   Aircraft traffic in Europe's skies was 73% of 2019 volume during the first four weeks of October, according to Eurocontrol.
