Coronavirus Update: Friday, October 22, 2021

CDC director Rochelle Walensky last night approved booster shots for the Moderna and J&J vaccines. She also approved the "mix-and-match" strategies for all three U.S. approved shots. (Pfizer was already approved for boosters.) The Washington Post has the details. Here are today's other developments:
        Thursday tie   The TSA says that 2,046,694 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints yesterday. That's 80.5% of volume compared to a similar Thursday in 2019. Both are almost exactly the same as last Thursday, October 14.
        Stall   Despite a generally upbeat third-quarter earnings call yesterday, Alaska Airlines chief financial officer Shane Tackett admitted the quarter's recovery "stalled" due to the effect of the Delta variant on travel.
        More Brexit fallout   Western Europe has gotten a handle on the latest wave of Coronavirus and new-infection and death rates have plummeted. Britain? Not so much. Politico.com has the details.
        Bright time  The Brightline rail service between Miami and West Palm Beach resumes service on November 8. Service has been suspended since March 25, 2020.
        Melbourne's moment   Australia's, second-largest city, has spent 260 days in lockdown since the pandemic began. It emerged today (local time) as locals flocked to bars, coffeehouses--and barbers and hairdressers. Agence France-Presse has the details.
        The long view of American history   The Missouri Compromise of 1820 permitted Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state and Maine to enter as a free state. How are we doing 200 years later? According to Johns Hopkins, fewer than 49% of Missouri residents are vaccinated and the state testing positivity rate is 11.55%. In Maine, just shy of 70% of residents are vaccinated and the testing positivity rate is 3.25%.

Coronavirus Update: Thursday, October 21, 2021

An FDA advisory panel has told the CDC that it is in favor of mix-and-matching doses from competing vaccines. TheHill.com has the details. Meanwhile, Pfizer says a booster shot of its vaccine has proven 95.6% effective against Coronavirus. CNN has those details. Here are today's other developments:
        Wednesday redux   The TSA says only 1,647,089 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints yesterday. That's almost exactly the same as last Wednesday (October 13).
        Happy happy joy joy   American Airlines president Robert Isom expects AA's corporate travel revenue to fully recover on a monthly basis by end of 2022. Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines Ben Minicucci says "pent-up leisure demand" is fueling a traffic surge. He expects the Seattle-based carrier will reach its "pre-Covid size no later than next summer." Both comments were made today during the carriers' respective third quarter earnings calls.
        Moscow misery   Moscow will close non-essential services from October 28 to November 7. The cause? A frightening rise in Coronavirus cases and deaths. Agence France-Presse has the details.
        Tokyo's time   As Coronavirus cases fall precipitously in Tokyo, the city is rolling back the 9pm curfew on restaurants and bars. France24 has the details.
        Unlimited chances for infection, too   USA Today has been promoting this story about a new Royal Caribbean cruise as "274 nights. 150 destinations. $60,999 per person." The unlimited chances to catch Covid in a floating Petri dish wasn't mentioned, however.

Coronavirus Update: Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2021

Ted Cruz, who trolls about as well as he senators--in other words, not so good--was at the business end of an epic slapdown from Down Under. After expressing his love on Twitter for Australia--he called it the Texas of the Pacific--Cruz complained about the country's very strict lockdowns. He was promptly torched by Michael Gunner, chief minister of Australia's Northern Territory. He reminded Cruz that more than 70,000 Texans have died from Covid, but no one has died in Darwin or the rest of Northern Territory. News.com.au has the humiliating details.         Look out below   The TSA says that only 1,446,353 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints yesterday. That represents 68% of 2019 traffic on a similar Tuesday. Both are the lowest numbers in two weeks.
        Out-N-Out stupid   The San Francisco branch of California's legendary In-N-Out Burger closed last week when it refused to enforce the city's rules about checking the vaccine status of indoor diners. The company issued a fiery challenge to the regulation--but reopened for outdoor dining. SFGate.com has the details.
        Wait 'til Michael Gunner finds out   More than 40 Texas hospitals report that they've reached ICU capacity due to the Delta variant's impact on unvaccinated Texans. The Texas Tribune has details.
        New York rules   New York Mayor Bill De Blasio ordered all city employees to be vaccinated by the end of the month or be placed on unpaid leave. Until now, the city's vaccine mandate was limited to health care workers and teachers. Politico.com has the details.
        La dolce vaxa   Italian premier Mario Draghi said that 86% of Italy's population over the age of 12 has had at least one dose of the Covid vaccine and 81% are fully vaccinated. The news comes as some Italians push back in the streets against the "green pass," a vaccine passport now required to work in the country.
        What a trit   Country musician Travis Tritt has cancelled four concerts because he refuses to play any venue that requires proof of vaccination, Coronavirus testing or a mask mandate. Nashville television station WZTV has the details.

Coronavirus Update: Tuesday, October 19, 2021

Washington State University yesterday fired its football coach and four assistants. Why? University employees are state workers and covered by the state's vaccine mandate. The coach, Nick Rolovich, and his assistants refused vaccines. ESPN has the details. Here are today's other developments:
        Goodbye, Columbus   The TSA says 2,001,297 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints yesterday. That represents 79.6% of 2019 traffic on a similar Monday. Both numbers are slightly lower than last Monday, which was Columbus Day.
        Ouch   Cathay Pacific, putative flag carrier of Hong Kong, carried only 131,774 passengers in September. That is down a startling 94.6% compared to September, 2019.
        Best of the worst   Eurocontrol says the busiest airport in Europe last week was Amsterdam Schiphol with an average of 1,081 daily flights. That is down 28% compared to 2019. Istanbul was the second busiest with an average 989 flights a day. That's down 19% compared to 2019.
        Russian misery   Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia's two largest cities, have imposed tighter Coronavirus restrictions as the national death toll reaches new daily highs. Worse, only about a third of the country is vaccinated. The Moscow Times has some of the details.
        There's no free lunch or free testing   At least three European nations--Germany, Switzerland and France--now charge for Coronavirus tests if they're taken for the purpose of travel. Schengen Visa Info has the details.

Coronavirus Update: Monday, October 18, 2021

Want to know why airline service still stinks? The Transportation Department says major U.S. airlines added 5,000 or so new employees in August. That means the industry is still more than 9% smaller than 2019. Here are today's other developments:
        More flying   About 6 million people passed through airport TSA security checkpoints at U.S. airports over the weekend (Friday-Sunday). That represents around 82% of 2019 traffic on a similar weekend. Both numbers are slightly better than last weekend.
        Half and half and all horrible ...   There were 593,153 new Coronavirus cases in the United States during the last week, according to Johns Hopkins. The death toll: 10,947. That's fewer new cases than last week, but a higher death toll. Both, of course, are horribly high considering the widespread availability of vaccines.
        Sadder skies  Eurocontrol says aircraft traffic in Europe totaled 162,562 flights for the week ended October 17. It represents 72.8% of 2019 volume, which translates to a shortfall of nearly 61,000 flights.
        Cathay calamity   Hong Kong airport authorities says the facility handled a daily average of more than 7,000 passengers during September. That's just 5% of pre-pandemic levels.
        Maine mandate   A federal appeals court denied an emergency request to stop Maine's vaccine mandate in Maine. The mandate requires health care workers to vaccinate by October 29.
        It's Greek to us   According to Greek Airport authorities, passenger traffic at Greek airports has increased by 98.5% this year compared to 2020. Arrivals since January has jumped by 110%. But travel from January through September remains down more than 49 percent compared to 2019 results.

Coronavirus Update: Weekend, October 16-17, 2021

Most major carriers report third-quarter earnings next week, but Delta reported this past Tuesday. If the others follow Delta, the news will be good. Delta says the year will end with business travel at 75% percent of "normal" levels. It also earned a $194 million 3Q profit before bailout funds. Here are this weekend's other developments:
        Barren Bali   Bali has reopened to visitors, but tourists aren't coming and there are few flights. The Sydney Morning Herald has some of the details.
        Scandinavia unmasked   Norwegian Air Shuttle, which has returned to its roots as a regional carrier, is the first Scandinavian airline to drop mask mandates. Trade publication FlightGlobal has the details.
        Indian summer at hotels   Nationwide hotel occupancy for October 3-9 averaged 63.9% for the week ended October 9. That's the highest occupancy rate since summer, says lodging analysts STR, but still down 9.6% compared to a similar week in 2019.
        Serial suing   A man suing seven carriers over mask mandates is now suing JetBlue Airways, too, claiming that it put him on a no-fly list due to the lawsuits. The Tampa Free Press has the details.
