Thursday tales   The TSA says that 1,904,732 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints yesterday. It's 75.9% of volume on a similar day in 2019. Thursdays now seem to have settled into the 75% range of 2019 volume.
All together now   Delta Air Lines says it now has more than 1,600 people on its no-fly list due to disruptive behavior and masking issues. Delta also wants all carriers to create a centralized list that would ban travelers across any airline if they are banned from one. Channel 2 in Atlanta has the details.

Sketches of Spain   Passenger totals on the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed rail line were higher in August than in August, 2019. Although travel on the line usually falls in summer, say Spanish rail authorities, there were 308,991 passengers in August compared to 265,217 customers in August, 2019.

Coronavirus Update: Thursday, September 23, 2021

The Food and Drug Administration yesterday authorized booster shots of the Pfizer vaccine for people over 65. The CDC today is likely to promulgate the ground rules. Here are today's other developments:
Six of one   The TSA says 1,460,478 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints yesterday. It's 66.7% of volume on a similar day in 2019. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, traditionally the slowest travel days, now seem to have settled into the 65% range of 2019 volume.
Delta dawn   Delta Air Lines, which will add a $200 monthly surcharge on the health care of unvaccinated workers, says 82% of employees have now gotten the shots.
Bit of a sticky wicket   When you consider their high fixed costs, British airports are losing a tidy sum on each passenger they serve. At London's Gatwick Airport, for example, the loss is nearly $600 for each flyer so far this year. Simon Calder, the travel correspondent of The Independent has calculated the costs and has the details.

The Associated Press has the details. Meanwhile, in Alabama, the death toll has passed 100 per day, but the University of Alabama at Birmingham has folded to political pressure and ended the vaccine mandate for its staff. Here are today's other developments:
The Tuesday tumble   The TSA says that 1,338,166 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints yesterday. That's 65.8% of volume on a similar day in 2019 and it is very similar to last Tuesday's performance.

Coronavirus Update: Tuesday, September 21, 2021

You surely heard about the three Texas women who attacked a New York restaurant hostess last week when she requested they wear a mask as required by New York rules. You even may have heard about the Texas couple tossed from a local restaurant because they were wearing masks, which violated the owner's weird sense of propriety. But it's all child's play compared to the murder of a clerk at a German store by a customer who said he felt "cornered" by the country's indoor mask mandate. Here are today's other developments:
Another manic Monday   The TSA says 1,820,152 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints yesterday. That's nearly 150,000 more than last Monday (September 13), which is notable since both days had approximately the same number of passengers on similar days in 2019.
Congratulations, America   The U.S. death toll from Coronavirus has now surpassed all the deaths the country suffered during the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic. ABC News has the grim historical details.
Keep your friends closer (or not)   The Biden Administration said yesterday that it was ready to permit vaccinated travelers from Europe and several other nations to visit starting in November. But Canada and Mexico? Not so much. The United States on Monday extended the closure of land borders with Canada and Mexico until October 20. Land crossings into the United States have been shuttered since March, 2020. Global News Canada has the details.
Down so far ...   Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific reports that its passenger load factor in August reached a pandemic high of 46.4%. In the first eight months of 2021, however, Cathay passenger traffic was down 92.2% compared to a similar period in 2019. Its capacity was just 13% of August, 2019, flight operations.
All politics is local (passport division)   Switzerland now will permit outsiders to get a Covid certificate for use in the country, but the rules for obtaining the official clearance vary by canton. (That's the Swiss term for local jurisdictions.) The Local Switzerland, an English-language Web site, has details.
All politics is local (election division)   Canada's federal election yesterday returned Liberals to minority control of the country and still-incomplete vote totals indicate virtually no changes to the size of the parties' contingents in Parliament. But the Conservative Party was stung in Alberta, one of its traditional strongholds. Political observers think the losses were due to the Conservative provincial government's botched response to Coronavirus. The Globe and Mail has the details.

Coronavirus Update: Monday, September 20, 2021

The Biden Administration today announced it would begin to lift onerous and scattershot Coronavirus travel rules. Restrictions would begin to fall starting in November. The Associated Press has the initial details. Here are today's other developments:
Bounce back weekend   Nearly 5.5 million people passed through TSA security checkpoints at U.S. airports over the weekend (Friday-Sunday). That's up substantially from last week--and represents 78.1% of 2019 traffic on a similar weekend. That latter stat was also up noticeably.
Suicide by Coronavirus   There were 1,030,256 new Coronavirus cases in the United States during the last week, according to Johns Hopkins. The death toll: 13,484, another double-digit weekly jump.
More September swoon   For the week ending on September 19, Eurocontrol says there were 24,210 flights each day in Europe's skies. That's 70.2% of comparative 2019 traffic. Both are down from previous two weeks and shows the post-summer decline you'd expect even in normal times in Europe.
If you mandate, they will vax   Italy is mandating a "green pass"--proof of vaccination--for all workers. The result? A jump of as much as 40% of Italians booking a vaccine. More than 75% of Italians already have been vaccinated. Wanted in Rome, an English-language Web site, has the details.
Rebound, in the eye of the airline beholder   OAG, the global airline schedule keepers, says total capacity through the end of the year "is currently standing at 3.7 billion seats compared to the 3.2 billion scheduled in 2020." That's about a 15% increase "in what was supposed to be the bounce-back year," OAG opines. It also represents a 36% decline compared to 2019.

Coronavirus Update: Weekend, Sept. 18-19, 2021

England announced a long-expected change in its visitor policies. There are many wrinkles, but for vaccinated U.S. travelers, it means the end of quarantine and pre-arrival testing. The new rules are effective starting October 4 (local time). Here is the new official guidance. Here are this weekend's other developments:
The worst is yet to come   A new survey from the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the industry trade group, claims lodgings will lose $59 billion in business travel revenue in 2021, up from $49 billion in 2020. Of course, the first two months of last year were strong domestically and before the pandemic.
Debbie Downer in July   Preliminary statistics from the Transportation Department show 73.4 million passengers flew on the 22 largest U.S. airlines in July. While that is up a whopping 207% over July, 2020, it was still down 15% from July, 2019.
The South will fall again   In 2020, Alabama recorded more deaths than births for the first time in history. The culprit: Coronavirus and Coronavirus denial, of course. The New York Times has details. Meanwhile, Mississippi has the highest Covid death rate per capita in the country. Governor Tate Reeves' response? He will oppose any Biden Administration vaccine mandates. Politico.com has the details.
Border-state battles   Virtually all of Kentucky's 171 public school districts will require masks. The Hill.com has the details. Meanwhile, a U.S. District Judge has ruled against Tennessee Governor Bill Lee's executive order allowing parents to "opt out" of school mask mandates. TheHill.com also has those details.
Coldlanta   Business travel to Atlanta has plummeted. So has occupancy at Atlanta-area hotels. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the details.
Not a lot of boosters   An FDA advisory group has recommended that the CDC restrict booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine to adults 65 and older. The CDC makes final judgments, however. Reuters has the details.
