Coronavirus Update: Friday, September 17, 2021

A CDC study released today concludes that the Moderna vaccine is the most effective against Covid-19 hospitalizations. It's 93% effective compared to 88% for Pfizer and 71% for J&J. TheHill.com has details. Here are today's other developments:
Up a bit   The TSA says 1,851,345 people passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports yesterday. It's 75.4% of volume compared to a similar September day in 2019.
Vax to the max   Italy says all workers must have a so-called green pass and employers will be fined if the workforce does not comply. It essentially means that all workers in Italy must be vaccinated. BBC has the details.
The Swiss solution   Switzerland continues to shuffle its Covid policy for visitors. If you are unvaccinated, you will be required to show a negative test on arrival--and submit additional in-country testing to local, canton-level officials. SwissInfo.ch, a branch of the state broadcaster, has some of the confounding details.
Russian intrigue   New York City says all attendees of the United Nations General Assembly next week must be vaccinated with a U.S.-approved vaccine. That has infuriated the Russians because its Sputnik V shot is not approved in the United States. The irony: Russian strongman Vladimir Putin says dozens of his staffers are now battling Covid-19. Meanwhile, Jair Bolsonaro, the controversial anti-vax president of Brazil, also says he plans to flout the rules.
Six of one   Nationwide U.S. hotel occupancy averaged 60% for the week ended September 11, according to lodging statisticians STR. That's lower than it has been in recent weeks.

Coronavirus Update: Thursday, September 16, 2021

The momentum to require vaccinations to fly is growing. Former Transportation Department secretary Ray LaHood has now endorsed the idea. Politico has the details. Here are today's other developments:
Downward   The TSA says that 1,455,913 people passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports yesterday. It's 67.8% of volume compared to similar September day in 2019.
Welkom   KLM announced this week that it wouldn't require staffers to be vaccinated and now the Netherlands government has loosened its rules for U.S. visitors entering the country. A few weeks after deciding all Americans must quarantine on entry, the government now says the rule no longer applies to vaccinated visitors. The details are here.
Vax and drink   Los Angeles County says that proof of vaccination will be required for entry into indoor areas of bars, nightclubs and wineries. Patrons and employees must have at least one dose of vaccine by October 7 and receive their second by November 4. At the moment, restaurants are not covered by the new rule.
Almost there   United Airlines has adopted a hard-line policy on vaccines and it appears to be paying off. Nearly 90% of its employees are now vaccinated, the carrier says.
Us, too   Virgin Australia joined rival Qantas in requiring staffers to be vaccinated. Customer-facing employees must have shots by November 15. Other staffers must be vaccinated by March 31.

Coronavirus Update: Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021

Buffalo sports fans better be vaccinated. The town's two professional teams, the NFL Bills and the NHL Sabres, now require fans prove their vaccine status for entry. The team venues also mandate vaccines for entry to any other events held there. Here are today's other developments:
May in September   The TSA says that 1,271,516 people passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports yesterday. That's the lowest one-day total since May 5, according to the agency. It's 63.1% of volume on a similar September day in 2019.
Finger in the dike   KLM says that it will not require all of its staff be vaccinated, but is making arrangements to keep unvaccinated crew members out of countries that require the shots. The details of KLM's finger-in-the-dike approach are here.
What about letters of transit?   France says it issued a total of 712,317 visas in 2020, sharply down from the 3,534,999 visas issued in 2019.
Covid in paradise   Less than three weeks before it fully reopens to international travelers, Mauritius is struggling with an alarming explosion in coronavirus infections and deaths. Cases in the Indian Ocean island nation have jumped five-fold in the past two months, says Agence France-Presse.
More dead air   Another major anti-vax radio talk-show host has died, bringing the number to at least a half-dozen this year. Bob Enyart used to play Another One Bites the Dust while reading the obits of AIDS victims, according to the Denver Post.
Death by Florida  Child deaths from Covid have nearly doubled since August, according to a report in Politico.com.

Coronavirus Update: Tuesday, September 14, 2021

There is no current need for a booster shot against Coronavirus, according to a study published in the The Lancet. "Booster doses for the general population are not appropriate at this stage," it concluded. Agence France-Presse has the details. Here are today's other developments:
American exceptionalism   Johns Hopkins reported 262,049 new Coronavirus cases in the United States yesterday. That's within 40,000 cases of the record high of 300,462 recorded on January 2. Exceptional, eh?
September song   The TSA says that 1,672,895 people passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports yesterday. That's down substantially from last Monday (Labor Day) and just 69.5% of 2019 volume on a similar day.
Rental wreck   Car rental prices and problems are likely to continue into next year, says Hugo Martin, the business travel reporter for the Los Angeles Times. Part of the reason? The U.S. car rental industry purchased only about 800,000 new cars in 2020, less than half of what the firms bought in 2019. Martin's full story is here.
Inject them in the wallet   Delta Air Lines says that 4,000 employees got inoculated after the carrier announced that it would add a $200 monthly surcharge on its health care plan for unvaccinated employees. TheHill.com has the details.
Vietnam's reopening   Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island will be the country's first tourist destination reopened to fully vaccinated foreign visitors. The test begins in October. CNN has the details.
More Hong Kong horrors   Hong Kong International Airport handled 222,000 passengers in August. That's about 4% of pre-pandemic levels.
Greece gets tight   Greece now bars unvaccinated people from indoor venues, including cafes and restaurants. Employees who have not taken the vaccine must undergo regular tests at their own expense. Greece has been lagging in vaccines; its uptake rate of about 55% matches the United States.

Coronavirus Update: Monday, September 13, 2021

Former French health minister Agnes Buzyn is now under formal investigation for her handling of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. Investigators told a special court in Paris that they concluded there were grounds to prosecute her. France24 has the details. Here are today's other developments:
Down a little ... and a lot   About 5.1 million people passed through TSA security checkpoints at U.S. airports over the weekend (Friday-Sunday). That's down about 200,000 from the three-day Labor Day Weekend--and represents 74.8% of 2019 traffic on a similar weekend. That latter stat is down nearly 10 percentage points compared to Labor Day weekend's comparative performance.
A little better ... and a lot worse   There were 1,010,209 new Coronavirus cases in the United States during the last week, according to Johns Hopkins. That is down about 10% from last week. The death toll was 11,298, up more than 10% from last week.
September swoon   For the week ended September 12, Eurocontrol says there were 24,529 flights each day in Europe's skies. That's 70.8% of comparative 2019 traffic. Both are down from last week and point to the post-summer decline you'd expect even in normal times in Europe.
No passport for you   England has scrapped the idea of a vaccine passport similar to the so-called green passes being issued by EU countries. Politico Europe has the details.
Thailand cracks the door wider   Thailand, which has reopened two island destinations to visitors, says five more places will welcome travelers again beginning October 1. The capital Bangkok and the popular tourist destination of Chiang Mai are included. The Thai Tourism Authority has the details.

Coronavirus Update: Weekend, Sept. 11-12, 2021

Don't want to say that I told you so, but I did warn you in a Tactical Traveler weeks ago that a vaccine mandate to fly was working its way up the federal bureaucracy. And Anthony Fauci is now publicly supporting such a mandate. TheHill.com has details. Here are this weekend's other developments:
For a few workers more   U.S. carriers added 5,634 workers in June compared to May, but the total full-time force (715,312) remains more than 67,000 below March, 2020, numbers. The figures were released by the Transportation Department.
For a few guests more   U.S. hotel performance ticked up a bit last week, according to lodging statistician STR. Through September 4, average nationwide occupancy was 61.3%.
The ongoing Florida follies   Florida Governor Ron DeSantis continues his crusade against school mask mandates. after being turned away by lower courts, he won a temporary victory in the Florida Court of Appeals. The saga continues.
