Coronavirus Update: Friday, September 10, 2021
You surely heard that President Biden issued sweeping new Coronavirus measures yesterday. Most notable: OSHA will issue an emergency regulation requiring businesses with 100 or more employees to ensure the workforce is fully vaccinated or test unvaccinated workers at least once a week. Experts say that will impact 100 million Americans. Here are today's other developments:
Good morning, Delta variant The TSA says 1,685,668 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints Thursday. It represents just 68.8% of 2019 volume, the lowest one-day percentage in some time.
The other Delta variant Delta Air Lines says about 20% of its unvaccinated employees have agreed to be vaccinated after the carrier said they'd pay higher health care premiums if they continue to refuse the shots.

No masks, more fines Following President Biden's address yesterday, the TSA says that it has increased fines for in-flight mask violations. It's now $500-$1,000 for first offenders and $1,000-$3,000 for repeat offenders. The problem: Only two passengers fined to date have agreed to pay the levies.
School daze Los Angeles is now the largest school district in the nation to mandate vaccines for students aged 12 or older. The

France tightens up France removes the United States from its "green" list effective on Sunday, September 12. It means unvaccinated travelers cannot enter the country except for essential reasons.
Austria tightens up Effective September 15, Austria will require all citizens and visitors to use FFP2 masks in supermarkets and on public transportation. Cloth masks are now currently acceptable. Unvaccinated people will be required to wear FFP2 masks instead of cloth masks when shopping in nonessential retail locations. Moreover, antigen tests will only be valid for 24 hours.
Sweden opens up Sweden is eliminating most of its Covid measures during this month. U.S. travelers are still barred from the country, however. Reuters has the

The U.S. Department of Labor says that initial jobless claims fell to a new pandemic low of 310,000 last week. Here are today's other developments:
Wednesday wobble The TSA says that 1,439,804 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints on Wednesday. It represents 71.8% of 2019 volume, resuming the recent downward trend interrupted during the Labor Day weekend upswing.
United gets tough United Airlines has adopted the toughest employee-vaccination in the U.S. industry and it has issued strict guidelines for employees seeking religious or medical exemptions. The Associated Press has the

WestJet mandates Canadian carrier WestJet says all employees must be vaccinated against the Coronavirus by October 30. All new hires must already be vaccinated.
A lei and a vax Seven Waikiki Beach properties in Honolulu owned by Highgate Hotels will require all employees and all guests be vaccinated starting October 15. The hotels include the Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard by Marriott and independently branded properties. They are the first Hawaii hotels to mandate guests be vaccinated.
Slicing and dicing European skies Eurocontrol, which operates Europe's air traffic control, says intra-Europe flight volume is down 30% down compared to 2019. Flights to/from other regions are down 42%, but flights to/from North America are down 46%.
Hot air The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which winds through the heart of Manhattan, will have in-person spectators this year. Last year's spectacle, which is televised nationwide, had no spectators and a sharply reduced parade of balloons and floats.
Keep on keeping on A Florida judge has ruled that school districts can continue to enforce mask mandates while the state's governor, Ron DeSantis, fights those rules in court. About a dozen Florida school districts require masks for students despite a DeSantis executive order. CNN has the

September song The TSA says 1,662,932 people passed through airport security checkpoints on Tuesday. It represents 85.6% of 2019 volume on a similar day.
Hawaiian disappointment Hawaiian Airlines is the latest U.S. carrier to report that the Delta variant is spoiling optimistic predictions. The carrier now says third quarter revenue will be about four points below previous estimates and even a paper profit won't be possible.
All good things end by starting again Air Canada says its disliked, low-cost Rouge division has relaunched with flights from Toronto to Las Vegas, Orlando and Regina.
Maui mandates Effective September 15, Maui County (that includes the islands of Molokai and Lanai) will require bars and restaurants to close by 10 p.m. Moreover, proof of vaccination will be required to dine at indoor restaurants. Unvaccinated customers are limited to outdoor dining or take-out service.

Manic (sorta) Monday The TSA says that 2,025,556 people passed through U.S. airport security checkpoints on Monday. It's the best Monday performance in a month and represents 88.3% of 2019 volume.
Give us passports or give us death Sixty-one percent of Americans now want the airlines to require proof of vaccination to travel, according to a new poll from Gallup. That's up from 57% in April and higher than the number of people who want proof of vaccination for hotel stays (53%) or dining in restaurants (53%). The complete poll is available

Laboring over numbers About 5.3 million people passed through TSA security checkpoints at U.S. airports over the weekend (Friday-Sunday). That is almost exactly the same as last week and it represents 83.9% of 2019 traffic on a similar weekend. But be warned: Exact comparisons are difficult because of Labor Day.
One more week of needless pain There were 1,146,098 new Coronavirus cases in the United States during the last week, according to Johns Hopkins. The death toll was 10,929.
Up a bit For the week ended September 5, Eurocontrol says there were 25,087 flights each day in Europe's skies. That's 72% of comparative 2019 traffic, a slight improvement over last week.
Down goes Denmark Effective today, Denmark has banned entry to all unvaccinated travelers arriving from the United States.

Coronavirus Update: Weekend, September 4-5, 2021
Sweden has extended its ban on non-EU travelers until October 31. That means U.S. visitors remain all but totally barred. Here are this weekend's other developments:
Spain tightens up Spain was one of the first European countries this spring to reopen to U.S. travelers without restriction. That's over now. Effective Monday (September 6), Spain will require U.S. visitors provide a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours before travel or proof of full vaccination.
Delta down U.S. hotel performance continued to decline from previous weeks, according to lodging statistician STR. Through August 28, average nationwide occupancy was 61%, a drop of about nine points from its summer high. STR says the Delta variant has exacerbated the seasonal drop in occupancy.
American anti-vaxxers are on their own American Airlines says unvaccinated staff will be required to use their own sick days if they catch the coronavirus. The new protocol is set to take effect at the beginning of October. Previously, an employee who got sick with the virus had special pandemic leave and did not have to use sick time. Fully vaccinated employees of the carrier will continue to enjoy pandemic leave, which does not count against sick days.
No Vax? Go back to school Alaska Airlines says it will give $200 to employees who provide proof of vaccination. Unvaccinated Alaska Airlines employees now will be required to submit to new testing procedures and take a mandatory vaccine education class. The company says 75% of employees have been vaccinated.
Meanwhile, back in Florida ... Ambulances in Florida are waiting hours to offload patients since hospitals around the state have run short of critical-care beds. "Never in my entire career have I seen anything like this," says Andrew Wilson, chief medical officer at a hospital near Tampa. WFTS TV in Tampa Bay has the
