Nearly half of all Manhattan employers have delayed return-to-office plans dues to the Delta variant of the Coronavirus. TheHill.com has the

Laborious statistics The TSA says 1,896,846 people passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports on Thursday. That is higher than the previous Thursday (August 26) and represents 90% of 2019 volume on a similar day. But a warning: TSA statistics tend to skew around holiday weekends.
Finger in the dike The Netherlands in June opened to U.S travelers without any restrictions. Now the Dutch have slammed on the brakes after the EU removed the United States from the safe list. Starting tomorrow, only vaccinated U.S. travelers may visit and they will be required to self-quarantine on arrival and submit to testing. The new rules were promulgated this morning (local time) and can be examined

KLM cancels Within hours of the Netherlands decision to restrict U.S. travelers (see above), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced it was cancelling plans to resume flights from Amsterdam to Miami, Orlando and Las Vegas. They were all due to return on October 31.
No jobs This morning's disappointing report from the Labor Department--only 235,000 new jobs were added in August--was especially notable for this nugget: The leisure and hospitality segment added net zero new jobs last month. The sector had been adding about 350,000 new jobs each month and is still down 1.7 million positions from pre-pandemic highs.
Game faces Chicago's United Center, home of the NBA Chicago Bulls and the NHL Chicago Blackhawks, will require proof of vaccination to enter the arena.
Cold comfort Alaska Airlines says it has experienced a "moderate" decline in bookings due to rising Coronavirus cases. It now predicts third-quarter revenue to be 19-21% below 2019 and projects cash flow to be at the low end of its previous guidance.
Florida Follies continue For reasons known only to him, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has appealed a court ruling that he exceeded his authority by ordering school boards not to impose mask requirements on students. The Associated Press has

The Delta variant of the Coronavirus is slowing travel, but apparently not the economy at large. New weekly applications for jobless benefits hit a new post-lockdown low last week, according to the Labor Department. TheHill.com has the

Your view of the glass The TSA says 1,465,197 people passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports on Wednesday. It is the first time daily volume fell below 1.5 million for two consecutive days since May 18-19. However, at 77.6% of comparative 2019 volume, it's the best performance in more than a week.
We're (still) closed, mate Australia has extended the closure of its borders until December 17. Qantas last week said it would resume some international flights on December 18. So let's watch what happens.
Cold shoulder Sweden has reimposed entry restrictions for travelers from the United States and five other countries, but will consider more lenient rules for vaccinated people. No details on that exemption, however.
Cruel, cruel summer Belgian tourism officials say visitor counts in Brussels were down 70% this summer compared to 2019. Covid may only be partially to blame for the slow return of tourists. "Between the reopening of restaurants on May 8 and August 5, there were 78 consecutive rainy days, including 26 stormy days," explained Fabian Hermans, administrator of Brussels Horeca Federation, the city's tourism operation.
We're still welcome At least three EU nations--Ireland, Portugal and Croatia--say they won't bar American visitors despite the EU removing the United States from the safe list.
Coronavirus Update: Wednesday, September 1, 2021
Google is the latest mega-corporation to push back its "return-to-office" initiatives. The October 18 date has been scrapped. The new target: January 10. Experts say business travel can't recover until business travelers first return to the office. Here are today's other developments:
Plunge The TSA says 1,345,064 people passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports on Tuesday. That's the lowest absolute number since May 11. AP business writer David Koenig notes the 7-day moving average has fallen for 30 consecutive days. Compared to 2019 figures, he calculates August traffic (-22.8%) was lower than July volume (-20.3%).
First strikes Just hours after the EU took the United States off its "safe" list, member nations are reacting. Effective immediately, virtually all U.S. travelers regardless of vaccine status are banned from entering Bulgaria. Italy is tightening up, too. Vaccinated travelers are still welcome, but must now show a negative test no older than 72 hours before arrival. Unvaccinated travelers must "self-isolate" for five days on arrival.
Don't toddle here Chicago has expanded its travel advisory to all states except Vermont. The advisory does not have the force of law, but the implication is clear: Don't come to the toddlin' town if you can avoid it. The

About face Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf had said school mask mandates should be left to local authorities in the commonwealth. He changed his mind yesterday and ordered all institutions in the state to implement a mask mandate at the start of the school year.

That 70s show The TSA says that 1,629,475 people passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports on Monday. That represents 71.5% of volume on a similar day in 2019. Recent days have shown that air travel after the summer boom seems to be settling into the 70% range.
Show it in Honolulu Proof of vaccination or a negative test within the previous 48 hours will be required to enter restaurants, bars, indoor gym facilities, entertainment and recreational settings on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The rule, which includes Honolulu, begins September 13 and will last at least 60 days. The

Coronavirus hospitalizations nationwide passed the 100,000-patient mark for the first time since the winter. Florida and Texas, two states that have aggressively resisted mask and vaccine mandates, are the worst affected.

Not bad, actually ... More than 5.2 million people passed through TSA security checkpoints at U.S. airports over the weekend (Friday-Sunday). That continues the decline of weekend travel volume this month. However, it represents 81% of 2019 traffic on a similar weekend, better than last weekend.
Another week of needless pain There were 1,086,936 new Coronavirus cases in the United States during the last week, according to Johns Hopkins. The death toll was 9,028. Nearly all deaths are from the Delta variant infecting unvaccinated people.
Up a bit For the week ended August 29, Eurocontrol says there were 175,384 flights in Europe's skies. That's a few more flights than last week, but only 70.8% of comparative 2019 traffic.
