The Thursday tumble The TSA says that 1,826,310 people passed through airport security checkpoints on Thursday. That's 71.3% of 2019 volume on a similar day and by far the slowest Thursday of the month.
Hotel fails Nationwide hotel occupancy fell to 63.7% for the week ended August 21. STR, the industry recordkeepers, explains that it "reflect[s] seasonal demand patterns and concerns around the pandemic."
Einstein in South Dakota You know what Einstein said about insanity, right? South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem apparently doesn't. After approving the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally last year and seeing the Coronavirus rate skyrocket, Noem approved the rally again this year. The result? Cases in South Dakota have quintupled. Europe's summer places Airline traffic in Greece on August 25 was just 6% below 2019, says Eurocontrol, which runs Europe's air traffic control system. Other countries fared less well. Belgium was down 22%, France 28%, Italy and Spain 29% and Portugal down 32%. Nordic countries fared the poorest. Finland was off 59%, Latvia 54% and Sweden 53%. Ireland and the United Kingdom suffered almost as badly, down 51%.
Singapore style Singapore says it will reopen Terminals 1 and 3 at Changi Airport starting on September 1. But "open" is a stylized word. Consider the severe restrictions announced

Coronavirus Update: Thursday, August 26, 2021
This is not good: Studies show the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are about 66% effective against the Delta variant of the Coronavirus. The vaccines were around 90% effective against the initial form of Covid-19. Agence France-Presse has the

Dog days The TSA says that 1,539,707 people passed through airport security checkpoints on Wednesday. That's 70.3% of 2019 volume on a similar day, the lowest percentage since mid-June. Actual daily "throughput" is back to late-May totals.
Canada coordinates Air Canada has ordered all employees to get vaccinated by October 30. That is no surprise given Canada's aggressive federal response to vaccine mandates. The official Air Canada announcement is

Texas two-step Never let it be said that Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has had Covid himself, isn't intent on catering to anti-vax wackos in the Republican Party. A Texas law bars counties and school boards from mandating vaccines with emergency-use approval. But now that the Pfizer vaccine has gotten permanent approval and some Texas school districts mandated shots, Abbott issued an executive order banning those mandates. TheHill.com has the

Happier hotels Canada's hotel industry registered a 54.5% average occupancy rate in July, the best monthly performance since February, 2020.
Granular Europe Europe's flying revival has been extraordinarily uneven, says Eurocontrol, which operates the continent's air traffic control. Turkish Airlines, for example, is operating 90% of its summer 2019 schedule. Air France (73%) and KLM (77%) haven't been as lucky. Lufthansa is operating just 54% of its schedule and British Airways lags all major players with just 46% of 2019 operations.
Magical mandates Disney has struck a deal with its unions to mandate a vaccine for all of its unionized employees at Florida's Walt Disney World by October 22. Disney mandated vaccines for non-union employees in late July.

Delta adds an anti-vax fee Delta Air Lines won't impose a vaccine mandate on employees, but those who refuse will be required to test regularly and pay a $200-a-month penalty on their health care. CNBC has the

Slowly it turns II ... American Airlines chief revenue officer Vasu Raja said today that August revenue is not meeting internal forecasts. At an industry conference, he said that American anticipates a "slower recovery in business demand than what we’ve seen."

Not with a bang ... About 5.6 million people passed through TSA security checkpoints at U.S. airports over the weekend (Friday-Sunday). That continues the decline of weekend travel this month. It represents 79.5% of 2019 volume, around 1.5 points below last weekend's comparative tally.
The bad old days are back There were 1,031,057 new Coronavirus cases in the United States during the last week, according to Johns Hopkins. The death toll was 7,003. They are numbers not seen since the beginning of the year, before the vaccines became widely available.
Going nowhere For the week ended August 22, Eurocontrol says there were 172,463 flights in Europe's skies. That's a few more flights than last week, but only 70.1% of comparative 2019 traffic, which is a slight decline.
June was busting out all over Flights operated in June, 2021, reached 83% of pre-pandemic levels, according to the Transportation Department. Systemwide, 564,583 flights operated in June compared with 679,802 flights operated in June, 2019.
As we were just saying ... Just moments after the FDA gave permanent approval to the Pfizer vaccine, New York City mandated that all public school teachers and other staffers must be vaccinated. Until now, the approximately 148,000 teachers, staffers and contractors could opt out of a vaccine with regular testing. The testing option now ends on September 27, when all employees must have received at least one dose.
