92% return in Vegas   McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas handled about 4.15 million travelers in July. That's 92% of July, 2019, volume--a better return than you'd get in a casino.
Lax lodging   U.S. nationwide hotel occupancy was 65.7% for the week ended August 14. That's down substantially from previous weeks, but in line with the late-summer seasonal slowdown. Average daily rate ($139.18) remained almost 6% above 2019 levels.
Go away, we're closed   Hong Kong suddenly added more than a dozen countries to its "high risk" category, including the United States and France. It has abandoned plans for a "travel bubble" with Singapore. The New York Times has the details.
Front line of the mask wars   Schools have emerged as the latest front in the politico-medical war over mask mandates. In Florida, several large districts have defied the no-mask order of Governor Ron DeSantis. (See here.) In Texas, school districts defying Governor Greg Abbott's anti-mask stand have scored several court victories. (See here.) But a federal judge has ruled against a statewide school mask mandate in Kentucky imposed by Governor Andy Beshear. (See here.)

There are no exceptions for regularly tested unvaccinated workers and no religious exemptions.
More airline vaccines   Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines have ordered all employees to be vaccinated. Singapore Airlines says 99% of active-duty pilots and cabin crew already have been vaccinated.
No racing please, we're Japanese   Japan plowed ahead with the Summer Olympics and the Paralympics, but it is drawing the line at car racing. The Japanese Grand Prix, scheduled for October, has been cancelled. It's the second consecutive year that the Formula 1 event has been scrubbed.
Brooking no Covid   Country music star Garth Brooks has cancelled the remaining five dates of his current stadium tour. Brooks' cancellations include the stops in Nashville, Cincinnati, Charlotte, Baltimore and Foxborough, Massachusetts.
