Coronavirus Special Report
December 26-31, 2020
Read all about it! More Coronavirus mutations are found and they're spreading globally even before they are officially identified. That is leading countries to further tighten their entry and exit procedures or add first-ever restrictions. Post-Christmas flying surges and reaches 50 percent of 2019 levels. More than 331,000 335,000 340,000 344,000 have died in the United States as we demolish single-day records for infections and deaths. The experts looking at 2020 travel numbers shiver. And more. Read from the bottom for context.
Coronavirus Update for December 31, 2020
Canada will require a negative PCR test for all airline passengers entering the country. Road and rail travelers may also be subject to the same new rules. The Canadian government announced the new restrictions yesterday, but we await more details--and a date when the program starts. That may be announced today. Here are today's other developments:
Another deadly record There were 229,042 new Coronavirus cases in the United States yesterday, says Johns Hopkins. The death toll of 3,744 is another one-day fatality record.
The millionaires The TSA says 1,163,696 people passed through airport checkpoints yesterday. It's 54.5 percent of 2019 volume and the fifth consecutive day above a million. December is now at 37.6 percent of 2019 volume, a half-point better than November. That makes it the "best" month since April's pandemic lows.
San Francisco has extended its stay-at-home restriction indefinitely. It also renewed the rule that all arrivals submit to a 10-day quarantine. Both orders were set to expire January 4.
Cruises of death Cruise employees who have been living on disused passenger ships since the pandemic are committing suicide at alarming rates. Bloomberg has the
details.
Ireland has imposed "full-scale Level 5 restrictions" for at least another month. That means no socializing in homes. Non-essential retail businesses that reopened only earlier this month now must close again. People are also not permitted to travel more than five kilometers from their homes.
Coronavirus Update for December 30, 2020
The United Kingdom has approved the third vaccine developed in the Western world. The Oxford-AstraZeneca version is notably easier to store and transport than the Pfizer and Moderna versions since it does not require super-cold temperatures. Here are today's other developments:
Death without end There were 201,555 new Coronavirus cases in the United States yesterday, says Johns Hopkins. The death toll: 3,725, the worst one-day fatality figure since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, Colorado confirms that the first U.S. case of the far-more-transmissible British mutation of Covid-19 has been noted.
Boom times The TSA says that 1,019,347 people passed through airport checkpoints yesterday. That is 50.7 percent of 2019 volume. It's the fourth consecutive day above the 1-million mark and eighth day since December 18 when more than one million people were at airports.
Dark December North American passenger jet arrivals fell 48 percent in December compared to last year. Latin America was down 46 percent. Europe was down 70 percent. Asia fell by 30 percent. The numbers were calculated by Cirium, the aviation consultants.
More home life The stay-at-home order for Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley has been extended indefinitely.
Denmark extended Coronavirus restrictions until January 17. All shops except pharmacies and supermarkets must be closed. Everyone save essential workers must work from home.
Rapping blue JetBlue Airways has banned rapper Lil Pump, whose real name is Gazzy Garcia. Police were called to LAX on Sunday to meet a JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale after Garcia was verbally abusive in-flight and refused to wear a mask. "He is no longer welcome to fly on JetBlue," a company spokesman says.
Of course China lied The number of Coronavirus cases in Wuhan, where the infection originated, could be ten times higher than the Chinese government claimed. That surprises who, exactly? Agence France-Presse has the
details.
Coronavirus Update for December 29, 2020
Coronavirus hospitalizations in the United States on Monday hit an all-time high. More than 121,000 people were hospitalized nationwide, according to the COVID Tracking Project. That figure includes 22,592 intensive care patients. Here are today's other developments:
Travel like it's 1999 Two decades of global aviation growth have been wiped out by the virus in 2020. Passenger numbers fell to levels last seen in 1999, according to aviation consultants Cirium. The company says the busiest day for worldwide flight departures was January 3. The lowest day was April 25, when just one-seventh of January 3's volume operated.
Records and context The TSA says that 1,111,751 people passed through airport checkpoints yesterday. It's the third consecutive day above the 1-million mark. For the 11 days from December 18-28, 11,331,113 people passed through airport checkpoints. That's 42.4 percent of 2019 volume, higher than any period since pandemic lows of mid-April.
Death march There were 168,817 new Coronavirus cases in the United States yesterday, says Johns Hopkins. The death toll was 1,718. Worse, the government says that only about 2 million people have received the first dose of the vaccine. With three days remaining in 2020, that's just a tenth of what the Trump Administration promised by the end of the year.
South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday announced a new round of COVID-19 restrictions. Bars must close and a ban on liquor sales has been reimposed. New restrictions include the closure of all beaches and public swimming pools in virus hotspots. The 9pm to 6am nationwide curfew has also been extended.
Russia has admitted what everyone around the world knew: Putin and the country's rulers lied about the Coronavirus death toll. It is at least three times higher than the Kremlin previously stated. TheHill.com has some of the
details.
Coronavirus Update for December 28, 2020
Four-star admiral Brett Giroir is director of U.S. diagnostic testing. He's not sure the holiday travel surge will lead to another Coronavirus surge. Because, of course, he's a sycophant in service to the Trump Administration's "see no virus evil" strategy. Politico has Giroir's
rationalization. Here are today's other developments:
Facts don't care about your feelings. The United States registered more than 63,000 deaths in the first three weeks of December. April was previously the deadliest month with more than 55,000 deaths, according to the COVID Tracking Project. The Hill.com has the dreary
details.
Records and context The TSA says that 1,284,599 people passed through airport checkpoints yesterday. That's a record since the post-pandemic lows of mid-April. It's also the sixth day in the last ten that passed the 1-million threshold. That said, some context is in order. For the month of December to date, total traffic is about where it was in October and November.
Not a Christmas miracle There were 150,092 new Coronavirus cases in the United States yesterday, says Johns Hopkins. The death toll was 1,209, less than a third of the all-time high of 3,682 recorded on December 16. But remember: Weekend numbers are fragmentary and incomplete.
Quiet skies Eurocontrol, which handles the continent's air traffic control, says Christmas week volume in Europe's skies was 44 percent of 2019's schedules. For the year to date, there have been at least 6,000,000 fewer flights in Europe.
Coronavirus Update for December 27, 2020
Europe's media are filled today with stories about "the first" person in each country to receive the Pfizer vaccine. They are nurses, elderly people and just average folks. Here are today's other developments:
Millions and millions served (traveler division) The TSA says that 1,128,773 people passed through airport checkpoints yesterday. That's nearly double the traffic on Christmas Day. It's also the fifth day in the last nine that passed the 1-million threshold.
Not a Christmas miracle There were 226,274 new Coronavirus cases in the United States yesterday, says Johns Hopkins. That's double the number reported on Christmas day. The death toll was 1,663.
The plunge Hotel occupancy in the United States fell to 36.8 percent for the week ended December 19. "Best" performance in the nation among the Top 25 markets? Tampa-St. Petersburg at 45.4 percent. Trailing the nation are Honolulu (21.6 percent) and Minneapolis/St. Paul (23.9 percent).
DC on a diet Restaurants are closing so fast in the Washington and the surrounding areas of Virginia and Maryland that
Washingtonian magazine is maintaining a
running list of casualties.
Coronavirus Update for December 26, 2020
The first vaccines have been approved by the EC and should be administered as early as tomorrow in several countries. Here are today's other developments:
Silent night, but ... The TSA says that 616,469 people passed through U.S. airport checkpoints yesterday, which was Christmas Day. That's just 23.9 percent of 2019 traffic. But remember: The TSA compares similar days, not dates. In 2019, the last Friday of the year was December 27, a busy getaway day for returning Christmas travelers and flyers going on New Year's holidays.
Death's respite, but ... There were "only" 105,906 new Coronavirus cases in the United States yesterday, says Johns Hopkins. The death toll was 1,223. But be warned: Christmas Day numbers are likely to be incomplete and fragmentary.
